In the last decade, different approaches have been used to mitigate soil contamination, however many factors can affect the success of any remediation method including soil heterogeneity and the contaminant type.Phytoremediation which involves the interaction of plant roots and associated rhizospheric microorganisms for the remediation of soil and water contaminated with high levels of metals, pesticides, solvents, radio nuclides, explosives, nutrients, crude oil etc. 'PHYTO' presents the concepts and application of phytoremediation and phytotechnology in one comprehensive guide, illustrating when plants can be considered for the uptake, removal or mitigation of on-site pollutants on a range of landscapes such as brownfields, landfills and military sites. Current scientific case studies are covered, highlighting the advantages and limitations of plant-based cleanup. Phytoremediation asa remediation technology that has been receiving attention lately as the results from the field trials indicate a cost saving compared to conventional treatment.This work also be used to help guide research, develop and regulation. Areas of needed research have been identified.
