In the decade of the nineties, Pav finished his castle and opened an espresso café and art gallery called La Rive Café des Beaux-Arts. This was quite a feat for three reasons; first, opening an Art gallery in a summer vacation town was a risk that most men in their right mind would never attempt; second, it took him away from completing the restoration of the castle; third, he was psychosomatically allergic to coffee. The mere smell of it made him nauseous. However, this was a dream of his wife, Lori, and he wanted to please her. He hoped if he put all of his effort into the project, he would prove his love and devotion to her and their marriage. The late hours and the stress of running a business and still trying to complete the restoration on his house made the intimate relations between these two lovers strained to say the least.
Pav would become a person of notoriety in the town of South Haven. He was recognized as an artist with a national reputation. The police would become admirers of him and his dog in helping and support of crime prevention. There were several articles in the South Haven Press about him. One was about the restoring of an old landmark, the Rock Terrace Resort. Another was about his recognition in art shows in New York, North Carolina, and New Orleans. There were several about his proprietorship of the La Rive. Unfortunately, Lori was never around when these interviews were taken. Even though he gave her equal recognition for the café's inspiration, it was his photo that was printed in the local and Kalamazoo papers. Lori became silently jealous and would withdraw from him emotionally.
