Omschrijving

Robert Barr (1849-1912) was a Scottish-Canadian short story writer and novelist who abandoned his early teaching career to write for the Detroit Free Press, later becoming its news editor. In 1881 he moved to London where he founded The Idler magazine in 1892 in collaboration with Jerome K Jerome. In 1895 he retired from its co-editorship to become a more prolific novelist, publishing a book a year. By this time he had established friendships with many of the best-selling authors of the day including Arnold Bennett, Joseph Conrad, Bret Harte and Rudyard Kipling. Because much of Barr's literary output was in the crime genre his works were very much in vogue, due in part to the popularity of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. Barr wrote and published in The Idler the first Holmes parody 'The Adventures of Sherlaw Kombs' (1892), a spoof that was followed a decade later by 'The Adventure of the Second Swag' (1904). Despite these jibes, Barr remained on very good terms with Conan Doyle who later descibed Barr fondly in his Memories and Adventure (1923). In 1904 Barr completed an unfinished novel by the recently deceased American author Stephen Crane entitled The O'Ruddy: A Romance. Despite his reservations regarding the project, Barr agreed to take it on due to his longstanding friendship with Crane. His adventure romance novel A Rock in the Baltic was first published in 1906.
