""A Defence of the Rockingham Party"" is a political treatise written by William Godwin, an English journalist, philosopher, and political activist. The book was published in 1789 and is a defense of the Rockingham Whigs, a faction of the British Whig Party that was led by Charles Watson-Wentworth, the Marquess of Rockingham.Godwin argues that the Rockingham Whigs are the true heirs of the principles of the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which established the supremacy of Parliament over the monarchy. He contends that the Rockingham Whigs are committed to the protection of individual rights and liberties, and are opposed to the arbitrary exercise of power by the government.Godwin also criticizes the policies of the Tory government of William Pitt the Younger, which he sees as a threat to the liberties of the people. He argues that the Tories are attempting to establish a system of absolute monarchy in all but name, and that the Rockingham Whigs are the only political force capable of resisting this trend.""A Defence of the Rockingham Party"" is an important work of political theory and a valuable source for understanding the political debates of the late 18th century in Britain. It is also significant as an early work by William Godwin, who would go on to become a major figure in the development of anarchist thought. In what I have now said, I do not much fear to be contradicted. It was not with a view to such as are attached to any of these parties, that I have taken up the pen. Those who come under this description, are almost universally the advocates of monarchy, and think that they have nothing to regret, but that power and police are not established upon a more uncontrolable footing among us.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
